‘Build Green – Live Smart’

1

At the ‘First Working Group on Meeting on Environmental Issues – Mumbai First’, EBTC was invited to make a presentation on best practices and technologies adopted by the EU in Green Buildings.

Mr. Joel Fernandes (Regional Director, EBTC Mumbai) presented ‘Build Green – Live Smart,’ and spoke about the challenges of Mumbai as a Mega City, and a way forward with the EU.

Background to the event

In November 2013, at the initiative of Mumbai First, a joint exploratory conference between the European Union (EU) and the Maharashtra Government on ‘The Challenges of Mumbai as a Mega-City – A way forward with the European Union’ was held in Mumbai. Representatives from the government, planning and development authorities, private sector and Europe as well as local and international experts participated. It was then decided to tackle three key development issues – environment, urban mobility and city planning through a series of separate workshops.

Taking forward that process, Mumbai First and the EU Delegation to India hosted the first of three workshops where three environmental concerns were addressed - water management, solid waste management and Green Buildings. The workshop took place from 10th - 11th July 2014 in Mumbai.

Build Green - Live Smart

In his inaugural note, Dr. Joao Cravinho (EU Ambassador to India) said that though European cities were different in scale and other parameters, it was possible to learn from their experiences to meet the needs of an ever-transforming city like Mumbai.

In his presentation on 'Build Green - Live Smart,' Mr. Fernandes covered topics such as barriers for green building in India, economic vs. environmental drivers for green building, and examples of European cities that have successfully implemented Green building technologies. The story of NewEn Ltd - an Italian Energy Service Company - is an example of a technology for energy efficiency, costs saving and environmental sustainability.
